How to Become a Soccer Agent

As soccer becomes more popular in the United States, more players will be developed that are good enough to go pro, either as a member of an MLS team or overseas. Those players are going to need agents—or as FIFA calls them, intermediaries.

By FIFA’s definition, an intermediary is the equivalent of an agent. But the process that it takes to become an official intermediary is a lot different.

With the passage of new legislation in 2015, FIFA no longer has an official licensing system. In fact, there are no longer any formal qualifications. All a person needs to do to get started is register with their national football association (FA).

When you register, there will be a registration fee (which varies from country to country; it is $400 in the U.S.). You will also have to sign an Intermediary Declaration promising you will work within the rules of the FA. Registrations will have to be renewed every year (costing $50 in the U.S.).

You will also need to pass what FIFA calls a “Test of Good Character and Reputation for Intermediaries.” It sounds like they are referring to a background check. You will also need to prove you do not have a criminal record.

Associations are allowed to add whatever additional requirements they see fit. For example, anyone convicted of a violent crime or a financial one is ineligible to register as an intermediary in the U.S.

How to Become an NBA Agent

With the NBA postseason well underway, there are probably hundreds if not thousands of kids watching James Harden, Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving work their magic every night. As they watch, most of them will be thinking, “That can be me someday.”

Some of them will be right. But those select few will not be able to get there on their own. They will need the help and support of friends, family, and coaches along the way. When they do make it to the NBA, they are going to need the services of a certified NBA agent as well.

It takes incredible athleticism, skill, and talent to become a player in the NBA. What does it take to become an agent for the league?

The league does not require its agents to develop a jump shot or anything like that. But the players association does want agents to be educated. They are required to have a four-year degree, but relevant negotiating experience can be substituted for education.

Potential agents will have to fill out an application (which will have to be approved) and pay a $250 application fee (non-refundable). All applicants are also required to submit to and pass a background investigation.

Along with the application fee, applicants will have to pay a pro-rated portion of $1250 in agent dues (depending on when you apply and how much of the current season remains). However, if your application is denied, it will be refunded.

Applicants will also have to take a written examination prior to the application window (July 1 through October 1). The next chance will be in January 2020.

How to Become an NFL Agent

So, after seeing Jerry Maguire a couple of dozen times, you think you want to become an NFL agent. You want to have your own ‘show me the money’ moment and be someone’s ‘ambassador of Quan.’

Of course, the reality of that world and what they portray in movies, are two different things. Not that the real world of an NFL agent is not exciting, but if you are looking to be Jerry Maguire Jr. or the next Bob Sugar, you may want to head to Hollywood instead.

But if you are serious about becoming an NFL agent, there is a process involved—and it isn’t easy. The NFL Players Association doesn’t want just any old person representing and guiding its members. It wants intelligent, educated people with the right intentions.

To that end, to become an agent, you will need to submit to and pass a background investigation as well as pay a $2500 non-refundable application fee. They will also want you to have an undergraduate and post-grad degree (masters or law)—but that is not all.

You will also have to pass a proctored written examination and attend a two-day seminar in Washington D.C.

The exam will cover things like the CBA, the Salary Cap, NFL Player Benefits, and other things you will need to know to represent a player. The test contains 60 multiple choice questions that you will have three hours to answer—and it is open book (you can prepare notes).

But becoming certified to represent an NFL player and actually being able to do the job are two different things. How to Become a Sports Agent

Being involved in professional sports is a dream that millions of kids have all the time. But only the most elite of elite athletes become pros in their chosen sport. However, that doesn’t mean that the rest of us can’t get in the ‘game.’

We just have to find a different avenue—like becoming a sports agent.

The job isn’t as glamorous or dramatic as Jerry Maguire made it appear to be. But it can be exciting, fast-paced, and incredibly short on dull moments. Like most jobs, if you are good at it, you can make a pretty good living in the process.

So—how do you become a sports agent?

For one, it does take a little money. Each sport’s players association will require you to pay an application fee—and they are not cheap. But they don’t want just anyone trying to become an agent. They want people that are serious about the job; being willing to pay $2500 for an application fee is one way to show you are indeed serious.

Every sport will also want you to pass a background check. None of the various player associations lists what could disqualify you as a potential agent. So, you may want to contact someone at the players association you are applying to if you need further clarification.

Some sports do require a college degree and even a post-grad degree.

Professional Opportunities Are About Promotion as Much As Playing For Small School Football Players

Athletes from major FBS programs are going to be the ones that professional sports teams look at first when it comes to the draft and free agency. It isn’t necessarily because they are the only guys worth giving a shot.

In some cases, it will be only because teams know of one player more than another because he played for a more high-profile school. He received the exposure needed to get a shot at the next level because of who he played for—not how well he played.

For talented players that did not have the good fortune of attending a major university, this is a frustrating reality. But it is a reality that can be overcome with one thing—the right promotion.

That is not to say that small school players should volunteer to take the rookie minimum just to get a shot. No, since pro teams are not aware of who they are, they need to educate those teams. The need to create a bio that can be sent to every scout they can find contact info for.

They need an online presence, but not one that shows off the awesome tan they got on Spring Break. It needs to focus on who they are as an athlete and a player. It needs to tell teams why the need to give a player they have never heard of a shot.

Getting into racing is a lot like every other professional sport in that it requires more than just talent. If your name does not happen to be Earnhardt or that of another famous racing family, it also requires a healthy amount of promotion. But unlike every other sport, opportunities in racing hinge on one thing.


You can be the best driver that has ever sat behind the wheel of a car. But if you don’t have the money to pay for a car, car parts, fuel, a crew, and transportation to and from races all over the country, you are not going to be driving anywhere other than the freeway.

Luckily, there are a lot of businesses that are open to the idea of sponsoring race car drivers if that driver can do something for them (i.e., sticker on their car, patch on their suit, etc.). Promote them, and they are open to sponsoring you.

Okay—but how do you find these guys? How do you know who to talk to or what to say?

Well, first, you have to develop a sponsorship deck, a proposal that sells companies on the exposure they will get by sponsoring you. Then, through research, you identify some local and national brands that you want to target and find the right contact information (easier said than done).

Then you start contacting them.

New Football Leagues Provide More Opportunities for Small School Players

Every year there are a small handful of players from small schools that are fortunate enough to get a chance to play professionally. Those guys aren’t the only ones with the talent, skill and athleticism necessary to play at the next level.

They are the select few that will at least get an opportunity to make an NFL or CFL roster. It isn’t necessarily because teams do not want to give them shot. But there are only so many guys that can be invited to training camp and even fewer that can be signed.

Historically, there just haven’t been enough opportunities. However, with the advent of new leagues like the XFL next year, that is starting to change.

The XFL has been getting a lot of attention in the media, but in reality, there are several professional minor leagues in existence that are dying to give underappreciated, talented players a shot.

The MFL, or Minor Football League, has been around since 1993. The Gridiron Developmental League started up in 2010 and the Rivals Professional Football League has been in business since 2012. There are also a handful of indoor/arena leagues (i.e., the Arena Football League and Indoor Football League).

Let’s not forget The Spring League.

Opportunities are out there. But just like NFL scouts and coaches don’t hear about small school guys, those same small school guys don’t hear about the litany of options that are available to those who really want to keep playing beyond college.

That can be where it helps to have someone in your corner; a player marketing service that keeps you informed about these other leagues and makes sure those leagues know about you.

Going somewhere other than a major FBS program shouldn’t exclude you from getting a shot at playing at the next level. But you (or the right service) may have to do a little extra work to get there.
